Hearing on EU citizenship Making the most of EU citizenship

The objective of the event will be to look at practical solutions to remove obstacles EU citizens still encounter in their daily lives when exercising their EU rights, notably their right to free movement and their political rights.

Considerable progress was made since the first EU Citizenship Report in 2010. Choose translations of the previous link to enable EU citizens to fully enjoy their EU rights in the different roles of their lives, be it as private individuals, residents, workers, students, consumers or political actors.

Hurdles however persist as shown by the public consultation Choose translations of the previous link launched by the Commission in 2012.

Contributions from citizens, policy makers, experts and civil society on how to remove remaining obstacles are of utmost importance.

The hearing constitutes a timely opportunity to reflect on avenues to strengthen EU citizenship in the context of the European Year of Citizens 2013 and in view of the 2013 EU Citizenship Report which the Commission will adopt in May 2013.

The 2013 EU Citizenship Report will be a concrete deliverable of the European Year and a relevant policy document to feed the debates throughout the European Year, and notably the Citizens Dialogues, leading to the European elections in 2014.
